Hardy cormous perennials in the Colchicaceae family, native across Europe to the western Himalaya, with a wider range through the Mediterranean region and parts of Africa. In UK gardens, colchicums are useful for extending bulb interest into autumn, particularly in grass, open borders, woodland edges and beneath deciduous shrubs.
