Description Silphium perfoliatum is a large, upright herbaceous perennial from eastern North America, reaching around 2–3m but remaining relatively refined for its height. The tall, almost glaucous green stems carry opposite leaves joined around the stem, forming the distinctive cups that give the plant its common name.

Branching heads of mid-yellow, daisy-like flowers are produced from August to October, followed by prominent seed heads. It forms substantial clumps and can spread where conditions suit it, so is best given room towards the back of larger borders or in naturalistic plantings.
