A plant recently featured on BBC Gardeners’ World, Helianthus 'Miss Mellish' is a statuesque perennial sunflower, producing large, vibrant yellow flowers with a spiky, cactus dahlia like form from August to October. Reaching up to 2m, it's perfect for adding bold height and drama to the late-season garden.

Excellent for cutting and loved for its 3-dimensional blooms, but it can be invasive, best planted where it can roam freely without disrupting more delicate neighbours. Thrives in good soil with sun and space, and will reward you with even larger flowers when well looked after.

Observed at Upton Grey to be very adventurous with broad smoother-edged leaves.
